China's tech stocks trail world by most since 2001

Chinese technology stocks are enduring their worst stretch in a quarter century, with the MSCI China Index tumbling 15% in 2026 — its worst global performance after Indonesia — as investors grow increasingly skeptical that the country's tech giants can monetize artificial intelligence. The index last week traded at the lowest level relative to MSCI's world index since the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks, according to Bloomberg.

The two largest components of the index — Tencent and Alibaba — have each plunged more than 29%, wiping out a combined $337 billion in market value.



Buybacks Accelerate as Revenue Slows


Tencent has responded to the rout by aggressively repurchasing its own shares. The company has spent more than HK$9 billion ($1.1 billion) on buybacks in June alone, on track for its largest monthly repurchase this year, according to Bloomberg calculations cited by Moneycontrol. The Shenzhen-based firm has bought back shares on nearly every trading day since mid-May, when it reported revenue growth of 9% in the first quarter of 2026 — its slowest pace in six quarters.

Alibaba, meanwhile, reported its first quarterly operating loss since 2021 in its March quarter results, with a loss from operations of RMB 848 million, compared with income of RMB 28.5 billion a year earlier. Core profitability, measured by adjusted EBITA, fell 84% year-on-year as the company poured money into AI and e-commerce.


AI Spending Draws Scrutiny


The selloff reflects a growing disconnect between the scale of AI investment pledged by Chinese tech firms and their ability to generate returns from it. Tencent said in March it plans to more than double investments in new AI products in 2026, while Alibaba committed to spending at least 380 billion yuan ($52 billion) on AI and cloud infrastructure over three years — more than its total spending in the category over the past decade.

Yet multiple headwinds are complicating the path to AI monetization. U.S. export restrictions continue to limit Chinese access to advanced semiconductors. Anthropic has accused entities linked to Alibaba of conducting the largest known AI distillation attack against its models. And a Bloomberg report that China plans to spend roughly 2 trillion yuan on state-backed data centers has raised fears of pricing pressure on private cloud providers.


Broader Tech Rout Deepens Pain

The weakness in Chinese equities has coincided with a global tech selloff that began in late June, driven by concerns over AI valuations and leveraged fund selling. South Korea's Kospi plunged 10% on June 23, triggering a circuit breaker, while the Nasdaq Composite finished that week down 4.5%. The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index has entered a technical bear market, falling more than 20% from its October peak.

China's securities regulator has vowed to crack down on speculative AI-related stock activity, with CSRC Chairman Wu Qing warning authorities will "thoroughly investigate and penalize" those exploiting technology themes to manipulate markets.

iPhone 18 Pro details exposed in Tata Electronics breach

A ransomware attack on Tata Electronics has exposed confidential details about Apple's upcoming iPhone 18 Pro, including supplier lists, component specifications, and photos of the devices during drop tests, according to Reuters reporting confirmed by multiple outlets.



The Breach


The cyberattack, claimed by the ransomware group World Leaks, first surfaced on June 10 when the group posted more than 200,000 files totaling over 630 gigabytes of data on the dark web. Tata Electronics, an Indian electronics and semiconductor manufacturer that serves as a key supplier to Apple and Tesla, confirmed the incident in late June, stating it had detected the breach "a few weeks ago" and immediately activated its response protocols.

A review of the leaked files by Reuters found at least six documents that map iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max components to their specific suppliers, detailing chips on the main circuit board, battery parts, and camera modules. The documents reportedly carry confidential Apple watermarks and internal codenames, and include images of the phones during drop tests. In total, hundreds of parts for the upcoming Pro models are detailed in the leak, revealing where Apple sources components from multiple vendors versus single suppliers.


Response and Fallout


Tata Electronics stressed that operations remained unaffected by the incident but has since tightened security controls. The company restricted remote access to sensitive internal tools such as purchasing systems and hired a global consultant to conduct a forensic audit. Tata also notified the Indian government about the intrusion.

Apple is "concerned" about the leak and is investigating the incident while coordinating with Tata on both immediate and long-term security measures, according to MacRumors citing Reuters. The breach also exposed documents reportedly linked to TSMC and Qualcomm, as well as Tesla engineering drawings.


Wider Implications

The incident strikes at the heart of Apple's supply chain diversification strategy. Tata Electronics has become central to Apple's efforts to shift manufacturing away from China to India, making the breach particularly sensitive. Beyond product secrets, the leaked cache reportedly includes employee emails, system logs, and passport copies of staff, raising additional privacy concerns. Reuters reported that a ransom demand was made to Tata Electronics, though the company has not publicly commented on whether it engaged with the attackers.

Elon Musk

Ashlee Vance's biography accomplishes something rare in business nonfiction

 

it presents a subject who is simultaneously admirable and disturbing without resolving the tension. Vance doesn't redeem Musk or condemn him. He shows you the man who paid for an employee's Lasik surgery on impulse and the man who fired his twelve-year executive assistant without ceremony. The reader is left to adjudicate.

The book's enduring intellectual contribution is its documentation of a managerial archetype the MBA curriculum cannot produce. Musk combines the depth of a specialist with the breadth of a generalist — knowing enough about rocket propulsion to correct an engineer's quantum mechanics equation while simultaneously negotiating NASA contracts and redesigning car door handles. This polymathic intensity isn't merely biographical curiosity; it's a competitive moat. Competitors who separate 'the business guys' from 'the engineering guys' cannot iterate at Musk's speed.

What distinguishes Vance's account from typical Silicon Valley hagiography is his treatment of the human cost.

The book's blindspots deserve mention.

Thiel's monopoly argument works elegantly for software companies with near-zero marginal costs but applies less neatly to industries with physical constraints. His survivorship bias is acute: we hear about PayPal's boldness but not the equally bold companies that crashed alongside Pets.com. The cleantech chapter, while brilliant as strategic analysis, may overstate how predictable those failures were in real time.

Still, Zero to One's lasting contribution is cultural more than tactical. It gave Silicon Valley an intellectual framework for ambition at a time when post-crash timidity had become orthodoxy. Its central provocation — that creating something genuinely new is both harder and more important than optimizing what exists — remains the most productive question any entrepreneur can sit with, even a decade after publication.

The 48 Laws of Power

Robert Greene's The 48 Laws of Power holds a rare position in modern nonfiction

 

part history book, part strategy manual, part philosophical provocation. Drawing from three millennia of examples — Sun-tzu to Bismarck, Medici bankers to Mao's guerrillas — Greene distills what he sees as the unchanging mechanics of human power dynamics. The result is less a prescriptive playbook than a diagnostic toolkit for reading the hidden architecture beneath every social interaction.

What makes the book endure is its radical amorality. Unlike most self-help works, which start with ethics and work backward, Greene begins with raw observation. He asks not 'What should people do?' but 'What actually works?' This places him in the Machiavellian tradition, and like Machiavelli, he has been celebrated and condemned for articulating what most people practice in silence.

Greene's most subversive claim is his opening argument

The numbered format promises algorithmic certainty, but the actual message is its opposite: fluidity over formula, adaptability over dogma.
